I’m wiped today. I stayed up late to wait for traveling husband to come home. Stayed up later to debrief on our days apart. Stayed up even later to play scrabble (via our phones, lying side by side in bed!).
The kids are bagged too. Our week is top heavy. Mondays are OK but Tuesdays mean gymnastics followed by Messy Church (which at least includes a meal, so I don’t have to cook after the somersaults and high beams). Wednesday is after-school sports club and taekwon do. These are for the eldest but his little sister tags along because papa is usually away that night. Yesterday featured another fatigue inducer – a birthday party at the local chippy, wedged in between the two.
Watching my daughter on the high beam made me think we could use a bit more balance in our routine. When we rushed into the gym last night, trailing a party bag, my son’s recently ordered Little Puma taekwon do outfit was waiting for him. He was pretty chuffed to put it on. And he got the medal at the end of the night for the best little puma of the session. I’m not about to tell him we’re pulling out because he needs to be in his PJs half an hour earlier.
For now, here’s our balance. We all sleep in a bit later than we should. I put on the new shirt and matching necklace I’ve been saving for a special occasion because on days when you feel this tired and grotty, dressing up can even fool yourself (and your husband, who says, pouring a strong coffee, ‘nice shirt’). I have cream in my coffee. And when my daughter asks as I’m reaching for the cereal box twenty minutes before we’re supposed to leave for school if she can have an egg with soldiers for breakfast, I take another look at my watch and realising full well that we don’t have time for such culinary delights, toss caution to the Derbyshire wind and say: ‘Sure, why not, let’s all have eggs!’
